There is overhead lighting in Polytechnic.
Yes all rooms have tile floors. You are allowed to bring a rug as long as you take it home with you when you leave.
There are hallways in Quad, so don’t worry. Throughout NRB week, in dining halls and in classes are a great way to meet people.
All of the pictures we have are posted. Starting in the fall we will be able to obtain more pictures. Sorry for the inconvenience.
Each Quad room is a little different. For that reason we can not guarantee all quad doubles have the same layouts.
There are washing machines in the basement of each Freshman Five dorm.
At this time E-Complex and North Hall are closed for renovations and will reopen in the fall. For this reason we do not have any pictures.
Each dorm has quiet hours. While some dorms are known to be more quiet, it depends each year. I would personally say that Quad is pretty quiet.
The living room, hallway and each room is carpeted. The kitchen, sink area, and bathroom are tile floors.
The closest dorm to academic building that upperclassmen can live in at this time is Quad.
At this time the themed housing for D Arts is only for freshman. I am sure you can contact the program to still do things with them, but I am not totally positive.
While all Freshman dorms are pretty close to the Mueller Center, the closest dorm is Hall Hall.
I know people that have bought from the RPI store or brought their own. Most people seemed to be pleased with the RPI store, though I have heard about problems with them. That being said I honestly think either is fine and it comes down to price and look of the sheets.
You are allowed to bring your own microwave to put in your dorm.
D Arts is located in Cary Hall on the second floor.
All dorms have kitchens in either the specific apartment or on a floor. All dorms are conveniently located near class. At this time I have no specific recommendation for you since almost all dorms fit your requirements.
The housing portal lists all available options at the time. It appears there may not be any other single available at this time. If you really would like to have a single the only option I can suggest is to contact Res Life.
All dorms that house freshmen are close to classes.
I personally brought my own desk chair and was incredibly glad I did. I was one of the few people that was able to study in my room because it was comfortable. That being some some people do not want to bring their own chair because they still have to keep the school chair with them in the room (or else you will be charged for it). Also some people will just buy a cushion to put on the school chair to make it more comfortable.
The food at RPI is similar to most colleges, not terrible but not fantastic. You will learn to appreciate home cooked food after your first semester here. What meal plan depends on how much you normally eat and how much flex you want. I personally got 15 meals a week when I was a freshman and never even hit that. That being said, I know people that got higher plans and took advantage of them. It honestly just depends on how much you believe you will eat at college. Remember you can always increase your meal plan, but you can only decrease it the first week.
Every dorm has quiet hours every night and during the weekend. I wouldn’t say any dorm is quieter than others, but some dorms tend to be more social. That being said, I believe that Quad is considered to be very quiet.
At this time we are trying to keep questions on here to mainly to housing. Please check out your Class of 2020 Facebook group to get recommendations about laptops.
We just added some pictures of the Freshman Five Bathrooms! Check them out here.
Please see all of the pictures for Quad here.
The closest dorm to the Computer Science Building is Quad, but it should be noted that that is not a freshman only dorm.
One thing should be noted about RPI: most of our residence halls have not been updated in a while.
If the distance from the Lally School building (Pittsburgh) is the most important to you, then room in Blitman Residence Halls. It is the closest to the Lally School building (Pittsburgh) but it does not have singles, there are only doubles.
If having a single room is the most important to you, then consider rooming in Quad. It is the second closet to Pittsburgh and has singles.
Private bathrooms for single rooms are scarce in Quad. If you want that you will have to go much further away from the Lally School building.
RPI has a vendor that allows you to rent a MicroFridge for the year. When you move in it is already in your room and you can just leave it there when you move out. The cost of this is $220 per year.
You can buy a mini-fridge for anywhere from $100-150 dollars. You can buy a microwave for about $50.
If you buy a mini-fridge and a microwave separately, you still are under the cost for renting from RPI’s vendor. And you would save money in the long run because when you buy your own stuff you can keep it for more than a year. For that reason, I recommend buying your own mini-fridge and microwave instead of renting it.
There are pros and cons to each freshman hall. If you talk to current students you will hear each of them say a different hall. If you want to see pros and cons for some of the halls check out the list on the official RPI Class of 20XX Facebook Group, you should be added to that soon. In regards to athletes and rooming, as far as we know you are not required to room with teammates, though highly recommend and most of the time athletic team members room together.
You are able to leave your dorms at whatever time you choose, as long as the campus is not on lockdown (does not happen often). You do not have to sleep in your dorm every night, you can choose where you sleep. You are a grown adult in college, no one is micromanaging you while you are at RPI.
RPI will try and fill your spot, but if they can not, they will not charge you for the empty room.
There are no singles in Warren Hall.
Yes in RAHPs B there are two singles and a double for a total of 4 people. The double occupancy room has two beds. If it helps, here is a floor plan of RAHPs B http://www.rpi.edu/dept/cct/apps/reslife/images/plans/beman21-28.gif
Our recommendation is that you contact ResLife. They would be able to help you the most.
In Stackwyck each apartment has one shared bathroom, i.e. 4 people people share one bathroom.
Boys and girls are able to live in the same apartment in RAHPs Apartments
You get a key to your apartment that also is the key for your mailbox. You then get another key that is to your individual bedroom
About 20-22 people share the bathroom in one of the Freshman 5 dorms
There is supposed to be an ethernet port in each dorm room
Davison is co-ed by suite. That means that every two room is the same gender. You will not be sharing a bathroom with another gender
There are 10-14 girls on each floor on average. They will share the floor bathroom
Yes. Each individual rooms as well as the common room have a cable hookup.
Singles are available for freshman, though they are limited. The chances of getting a single depend on the number of students in the incoming freshman class. For instance in each Freshman 5 there are 2 singles available as well as in BARH, but the singles in BARH may become forced doubles if the rooms are needed.
The set up for Barton is that there is one bunk bed and one lofted bed. This means that 2/3 will be sharing a bunk bed. At this time there is no way to do the 3 single separate beds.
At this time, to our knowledge, the only rooms that are allowed to be painted in Stacwyck are rooms in Alpha Phi (McGiffert house). They have a special lease that regular students do not have.
That being said, ask ResLife, they may allow it.
Beds in the Freshman Five & BARH are adjustable. You just need to pop out the bar and place it in the selected height. A hammer is beneficial, but you don’t need it to adjust the bed. Risers are not recommended for the Freshman Five & BARH as the beds are heavy. You can also choose to loft the beds.
For beds in Nason and Davison, these are not adjustable. You should get risers to raise the bed or choose to loft it.
For Barton, the beds are already lofted and you do not have to do anything.
Yes you can request they are lofted through the company RPI offers. I believe it is $150-200
This is a student run page. We get most of our information from friends, RAs or LAs that we know. At this time we don’t know people in Bryckwyck which is why we have no information about it at this time. I am very sorry we don’t have information about it right now, but if you plan on living there next year we could use your help and feature your room and what is listed there on our page for future students. Hopefully we can include more information in the future.
No they do not.
I do not know for sure, but I believe they run on an adjusted schedule (less busses, more time in between each shuttle). That is something you can call RPI about.
On the first floor this is a kitchen. In the kitchen you have a fridge, a stove, and a sink. There is a staircase that leads to the second floor lounge. You then have to go to the main staircases to get to the third floor study rooms that are above the 2nd floor lounge (i.e. the first and second floors connect but the third does not). Personally, I recommend if you are going to be warming things up a decent amount of times to get a microwave. I was on the third floor and didn’t want to walk down 2 flights of stairs, warm up my food, and walk back up 2 flights of stairs when I could just warm up my food in my room.
The freshman five beds are adjustable beds. They can go up to about 5 feet off the ground. These are the standard bed given for the freshman five and you do not have to specially order or request it.
