North hall is on the academic side of campus and further away from freshman hill, where most first year students are. That is the main reason I believe people may not want to live there.

They are connected to the basement of Sharp where they do laundry.

Yes. There is wifi all over campus.
How would you rank the freshman dorms? It seems like Sharp would be number one. In what order would you place the remaining dorms.
I would actually not rank Sharp as number one. I personally would rank the Freshman 5 as top. Everyone has a different opinion. That being said, if I were to give mine, it would be the following:
- Freshman Five
- Davison/Nugent
- Warren
- Barton
- BARH
- Sharp
I’m an incoming freshman for 2018/19, and going through this site, I can’t find much about the best dorm for a more antisocial person. I get the idea that the freshman five dorms are generally packed/busy, but what one would a more antisocial person best fit in?
Some students find that Sharp is less social because everyone has their own rooms.
I was wondering if you knew approximately how large (square feet) the rooms are in polytech? Most of the dorms have the size on the floor plan, but poly doesn’t.

All of Quad will be renovated. This may take some time to fully complete as it is a large dorm. Renovations are new flooring (hardwood replacing carpets), new windows and bathrooms redone

My son is in BARH and the heating is completely unregulated. Sometimes it goes full blast even when the temperature outside is 70 and sometimes it is completely off even when it dips down to 32 deg F. Can someone explain to me how can an institute full of engineers is unable to install something as simple as a thermostat for a residence hall?
This site is run by students, not Residence Life. I encourage you or your son to reach out to Residence Life about any complaints.
Is the Housing Rate for freshmen students in suites like Sharp Hall be more expensive than housing in regular dorms? Or all we do is pay what was written in our financial aid package?
The housing rate differs slightly depending on the dorm. You will pay the amount for the dorm you are living in. The most recent housing costs can be found on the home page.
What are the rules in the dorms?
Dorm rules are mostly common sense. If you’re under 21, no alcohol, obviously. RPI doesn’t allow parties in dorms, but that’s not really an issue since there’s usually something going on off-campus.
As far as room decor goes, none of the multi-colored 5-arm lamps since New York State considers those a fire hazard, the same goes for any upwards-facing lamp. RPI doesn’t allow anything that resembles Christmas lights, as unfortunate as that is. Curtains and flags are also on the no list because of the state. They should have sent you a list of things you can and can’t have at some point, if not, let me know and I can go scare it up.
The guest policy is also pretty reasonable, you can have guests over for 2 nights at a time, but of course, make sure your roommate is fine with it as well.
Quiet hours are from 11 PM to 7 AM on school nights and from 12 AM until 9 AM on weekend. Other than that it basically comes down to common sense and common courtesy. If you’re thinking of doing something that you think might be against the rules or might disturb someone else, don’t do it.
I will be in Colonie B next year. What are the dimensions of a room, closet, and bathroom? Are there shower stalls or tubs with showers? Thanks for your website.
Sadly, we do not have dimensions of the room. That being said, in Colonie B, it is two people living in a suite that has two adjoining rooms and a private bath. Square footage per room is approximately 165 square feet. One room has 163 and one room has 167 square feet. The bathrooms are tubs with a shower.

How much is it to rent a mini fridge?
You can rent a fridge through RPI’s vendor. That being said, a mini fridge by itself to rent is $120 and a mini fridge with a microwave on top is $220. The cost to purchase a standard mini fridge at Walmart is $90-120 and the cost to purchase a microwave is $60. In total, that would be about $180 and you would own the two items instead of renting for $220 and only for a year.
What does Davison have in their kitchens? (stove burner?, oven?)
In their kitchen is a stove, oven and a fridge. I believe there is a microwave, but RPI does not guarentee that. While living in Davison or Nugent, you get access to the basement of Sharp, which also has a kitchen that might have a microwave.
Can I bring a blender?
Yes you can bring a blender.
Are there any Bryckwyck Floor 1 photos?

How common is it for a rising sophomore to get a single in Blitman, Quad, or E-Complex? Do you need a very low lottery number to get a single or do most people want a double or apartment style dorm?
There is no way for us to know what the general population wants this year. That being said, historically, apartment style apartments go fast. Always make sure you have a plan A, B, C, and D for the lottery.
Do bryckwyck apts have a kitchen and bathroom whether double or single?
All apartments have a bathroom and kitchen

The closest dorms would be E-Complex or North. That being said it would be about 2 minutes closer than all other freshman dorms.
I am planning on rooming with an athlete during my season. Is that a question they ask on the roommate questionare and take high priority in or should I be finding an athlete on social media and then requesting them as my roommate when I fill out the survey?
This question is worded a little weird, but if I understand it correctly, you are asking whether or not athletes can room with other athletes that are not in their own sport during their playing season. Your roommate will not change throughout the year typically. You can choose to live with anyone that you choose. Your sport may have stricter policies.
Are the floors in Blitman coed or singlesex?

I believe you still apply for this through the ResLife housing portal. Your roommate would also be apart of this special interest housing if you select it as something you would like.
My son is in warren hall on the third floor. Does he have to clean his own bathroom? Will he need cleaning supplies?
RPI cleans the bathrooms in the room once a week and the communal bathrooms every day.
How many electrical outlets are there in a double suite in Davison?
At this time the exact number of outlets is not known. That being said, expect 2-3 outlets on each side of the room.
Hi, I might be transferring into RPI in fall 2018 as a sophomore. I know there aren’t any transfer dorms, but I was wondering if you knew of other transfers who were able to make friends in their dorms/if there was a welcoming environment for transfers?
Residence halls are very welcoming. For Transfer Students there is a special orientation that helps encourage friendships with other students who are going through a similar situation

That would be considered a one bedroom apartment. Yes it does have a private bathroom for the apartment.

Are the beds in stackwyck able to rise to store items under the bed? If so what is the highest it can go? The individual room carpeted??
Stackwyck is going through ongoing renovations. Not all buildings are renovated yet. Prior to rennovations, the individual rooms had carpeting. It can be raised about 4-5 feet high without bunking.
What does the A2 mean after the dorm room number?
It’s technically the bed assignment but it doesn’t really matter for anything. Since all college students are adults, the roommates can decide which bed they want.

Are rope lights (the kind encased in clear plastic tube) considered the same as string/holiday lights and therefore banned from dorms? Anyone seen them used in the dorms?
These lights are considered the same and are not allowed.
Does Warren Hall have air conditioning? If not, should I buy a small fan or a standing one?
Warren does not. I would buy a standing one, but it is personal preference
Recently at the orientation I noticed that bathrooms in Nugent hall do not have a fan. Are all bathrooms like that? Does it become a problem with no venting of the bathrooms?
The bathroom lights turn on the fan as well!
In the freshman five there are a block of rooms (117,217,317) that are 168 SF (20 SF less than the standard 188SF), with a door not centered, but off to the side. Are the wardrobes built in next to each other along the wall, as shown on the floor plan? And, do you have any photos of the #17-block with how students set up and accommodate for the smaller space? I imagine lofting is a good idea for both roommates who share these doubles.
We do have some pictures of this. The wardrobes are next to each other. You do not need to loft the beds to still have room!
