How much is it to rent a mini fridge?

You can rent a fridge through RPI’s vendor. That being said, a mini fridge by itself to rent is $120 and a mini fridge with a microwave on top is $220. The cost to purchase a standard mini fridge at Walmart is $90-120 and the cost to purchase a microwave is $60. In total, that would be about $180 and you would own the two items instead of renting for $220 and only for a year.

In the freshman five there are a block of rooms (117,217,317) that are 168 SF (20 SF less than the standard 188SF), with a door not centered, but off to the side. Are the wardrobes built in next to each other along the wall, as shown on the floor plan? And, do you have any photos of the #17-block with how students set up and accommodate for the smaller space? I imagine lofting is a good idea for both roommates who share these doubles.

We do have some pictures of this. The wardrobes are next to each other. You do not need to loft the beds to still have room!

Is it possible to loft one of the dorm beds on your own or with the help of family or friends? Do you have to ask reslife to loft the bed for you?

Straight from Residence Life’s Website:

Homemade bed lofts are not permitted in Residence Halls on campus.

Renssealer is partnering with loftconcepts.com to offer lofts to increase floor space in residence halls. Students living in Blitman, Bray, Cary, Crockett, Davison, E-Complex, Hall, Nason, North, Nugent, RAHP, Stacwyck, Sharp, and Warren, can order a loft at loftconcepts.com. You will receive in room delivery and assembly of their loft prior to arrival on campus.

Can both beds in quad be lofted? How would I loft the second?

One of the Barton pictures show a room with three raised beds, instead of a bunk bed and lofted bed set up. I’m assigned one of the larger Barton rooms. Is it now possible to have all the beds unlofted? Can my roommates and I do it ourselves?

Barton rooms are all the same size, give or take a couple square feet. They’re all triples, and they’re all three raised beds by default. The bunk and lofted bed setup was used before last school year. You can still opt to bunk two of the beds or loft any of them, but there’s a fee associated with doing so—I can’t remember the fee off the top of my head, but it was something around the $150 mark

If one person uses a room in Warren, since it is a double, would it still have the privacy wall and two beds?

I am a little confused by the question and have two answers depending on what you were asking:

  1. You are the only person assigned to your room – it is still a double room. RPI does not change the set up of the room depending on number of people in it.
  2. You believe you have a single room – there are currently no single rooms in Warren. Please see point above because you probably were just not assigned another roommate.

If this does not answer your question please resubmit a question that is clearer. Thanks so much!

Any suggestions regarding dorm theft ? 1) Is there a locking drawer in your desk ? 2) I see dormco sells safes that can secure by cable to furniture. Is this useful and to what would it secure ?

There is no locking drawer in your desk at this time. The secure cable you are most likely refusing to is for your laptop that would secure to a desk for example. That way if anyone were to try and steal your laptop they would have to bring the table as well. Personally I did not feel the need for this cable and had no issue with security, but it should be noted I always locked my door to my room.

I’m an engineering student and is Hall Hall close to classes? Also is it worth it to bring your own desk chair because the chairs they provide you look extremely uncomfortable. Also is food at RPI good? Which meal plan btw?

All dorms that house freshmen are close to classes.

I personally brought my own desk chair and was incredibly glad I did. I was one of the few people that was able to study in my room because it was comfortable. That being some some people do not want to bring their own chair because they still have to keep the school chair with them in the room (or else you will be charged for it). Also some people will just buy a cushion to put on the school chair to make it more comfortable.

The food at RPI is similar to most colleges, not terrible but not fantastic. You will learn to appreciate home cooked food after your first semester here. What meal plan depends on how much you normally eat and how much flex you want. I personally got 15 meals a week when I was a freshman and never even hit that. That being said, I know people that got higher plans and took advantage of them. It honestly just depends on how much you believe you will eat at college. Remember you can always increase your meal plan, but you can only decrease it the first week.

Can we rent a mini fridge and microwave or buying it on our own is better?

RPI has a vendor that allows you to rent a MicroFridge for the year. When you move in it is already in your room and you can just leave it there when you move out. The cost of this is $220 per year.

You can buy a mini-fridge for anywhere from $100-150 dollars. You can buy a microwave for about  $50.

If you buy a mini-fridge and a microwave separately, you still are under the cost for renting from RPI’s vendor. And you would save money in the long run because when you buy your own stuff you can keep it for more than a year. For that reason, I recommend buying your own mini-fridge and microwave instead of renting it.

Can you you raise your own bed? What tools are needed?

Beds in the Freshman Five & BARH are adjustable. You just need to pop out the bar and place it in the selected height. A hammer is beneficial, but you don’t need it to adjust the bed. Risers are not recommended for the Freshman Five & BARH as the beds are heavy. You can also choose to loft the beds.

For beds in Nason and Davison, these are not adjustable. You should get risers to raise the bed or choose to loft it.

For Barton, the beds are already lofted and you do not have to do anything.
