On August 2016, I will start my exchange program at The Lally School of Management and I would like to know which is the best residence taking into consideration: – I will only stay for the Fall Semester – I would prefer to stay in a single room (are there private baths for single rooms?) – Distance from the Lally School of MGMT – New/Modern furniture Thanks!

One thing should be noted about RPI: most of our residence halls have not been updated in a while.

If the distance from the Lally School building (Pittsburgh) is the most important to you, then room in Blitman Residence Halls. It is the closest to the Lally School building (Pittsburgh) but it does not have singles, there are only doubles.

If having a single room is the most important to you, then consider rooming in Quad. It is the second closet to Pittsburgh and has singles.

Private bathrooms for single rooms are scarce in Quad. If you want that you will have to go much further away from the Lally School building.

Can we rent a mini fridge and microwave or buying it on our own is better?

RPI has a vendor that allows you to rent a MicroFridge for the year. When you move in it is already in your room and you can just leave it there when you move out. The cost of this is $220 per year.

You can buy a mini-fridge for anywhere from $100-150 dollars. You can buy a microwave for about  $50.

If you buy a mini-fridge and a microwave separately, you still are under the cost for renting from RPI’s vendor. And you would save money in the long run because when you buy your own stuff you can keep it for more than a year. For that reason, I recommend buying your own mini-fridge and microwave instead of renting it.

I’m an incoming freshman, and was wondering which freshmen hall is the best/most popular? Also wondering what the situation is with incoming athletes and rooming. I know some schools make you dorm with teammates

There are pros and cons to each freshman hall. If you talk to current students you will hear each of them say a different hall. If you want to see pros and cons for some of the halls check out the list on the official RPI Class of 20XX Facebook Group, you should be added to that soon. In regards to athletes and rooming, as far as we know you are not required to room with teammates, though highly recommend and most of the time athletic team members room together.

Can you you raise your own bed? What tools are needed?

Beds in the Freshman Five & BARH are adjustable. You just need to pop out the bar and place it in the selected height. A hammer is beneficial, but you don’t need it to adjust the bed. Risers are not recommended for the Freshman Five & BARH as the beds are heavy. You can also choose to loft the beds.

For beds in Nason and Davison, these are not adjustable. You should get risers to raise the bed or choose to loft it.

For Barton, the beds are already lofted and you do not have to do anything.

Why is there next to no information about Bryckwyck? I have no idea what is in there, or even what the inside looks like. All Res-Life has is a floor plan that doesn’t really help. They don’t even have it listed in their “furnishings” page. Anything you might have to add?

This is a student run page. We get most of our information from friends, RAs or LAs that we know. At this time we don’t know people in Bryckwyck which is why we have no information about it at this time. I am very sorry we don’t have information about it right now, but if you plan on living there next year we could use your help and feature your room and what is listed there on our page for future students. Hopefully we can include more information in the future.

What’s in the lounges on every floor of the freshman five? Is it worth getting a microwave or do they have one there or in the kitchens?

On the first floor this is a kitchen. In the kitchen you have a fridge, a stove, and a sink. There is a staircase that leads to the second floor lounge. You then have to go to the main staircases to get to the third floor study rooms that are above the 2nd floor lounge (i.e. the first and second floors connect but the third does not). Personally, I recommend if you are going to be warming things up a decent amount of times to get a microwave. I was on the third floor and didn’t want to walk down 2 flights of stairs, warm up my food, and walk back up 2 flights of stairs when I could just warm up my food in my room.

I am not sure about what I will major in, maybe math, or engineering. So the problem is if I apply as a math major, is it possible to switch to engineering during the first or second semester?

This website is not for RPI questions in general, that is what the class Facebook group is for. But switching majors at RPI is in general pretty easy. You have to keep in mind the later you switch majors, the higher the chance you have to stay for an extra semester or two to catch up on the work you missed.

My son just received his housing assignment at Hall Hall. Is it possible to go visit RPI and see one of the 3rd floor rooms at Hall Hall during this summer vacation? Thank you.

This would be a question you can ask Admissions and / or Res Life. If you visit you can ask for a residence hall tour of the Freshman Five, but it may not be Hall Hall. Keep in mind the Freshman Five are all identical except for the suites on the first floor, which does not apply to you. Furthermore, you can check out the pictures of the Freshman Five on our website to get a good idea of what the room can look like.

How big are the bathrooms in Hall Hall?

They are the same sized bathrooms as all of the other Freshman Five. Between the toilets, sinks and showers, they take up the size of two dorm rooms. When you first walk into the room you will have stalls (for women there are 5, this may be different than men), then you walk through a doorway and you have 5 sinks and 5 showers.

I’m a incoming freshman and I’m interested in Nugent hall. May I get a few picture that shows the room and its structure, the privacy wall in the center of the room, and the bathroom? I would really appreciate it.

If you look at the tab “Room Photos” and then “Davison and Nugent Hall” you will find almost all of the pictures you are looking for. Sadly, we do not have pictures of the bathroom but the setup is sink in the room, door to the bathroom (lockable), toilet, shower, door to suite room (lockable), sink in room.

Room Pictures Needed!

We are looking for new pictures to update RPIrooms.com! If you would like to take pictures of you room, tell us where it is located and the type of room (double, triple, suite, etc.) that would be fantastic! You can check out the current rooms online to see how the pictures are typically shown. Please send the photos to blackr2@rpi.edu!! Thanks so much

I would like to live in quad next year, in a triple. The location is fantastic and I don’t really want to live on freshman hill anymore. But I keep hearing conflicting opinions on the quality of the quad rooms. Some people seem to think quad is fine, while others pretty much describe it as a slum. Could I please get a straight answer on what the triples in quad are really like? Thanks!

Quad is often quieter than other housing options. The rooms are irregularly shaped but you are very close to class. There are also no long hallways and upperclassmen live on the third floor. In addition, you have AC. It really depends on what the person is looking for if they are interested in Quad.
