No, you may decide on which bed you want with your roommate(s). The number is only for indicating you as a member of the room.

I’d like to bring a stainless steel pegboard with me for aesthetic and functional reasons, but I’m not sure how feasible mounting it would be. I’m probably renting a loft bed, and I was thinking of just clamping it to the rails on the inside of the loft. Would this be acceptable, or should I leave the whole thing behind?
I’ve never seen people use that in dorm before and don’t really know how it works. If you can install it without using nails, you will be fine.
Hi! Could you please describe what the cabinet spaces are like in the Freshmen Five dorms? (Like drawers, shelves, are they deep, etc) Thank you!
In Freshman Five, for each person, there’s one 3-drawer dresser, one closet with two drawers and a desk with three drawers. The desk has two small drawers and a large and deep one, on the top there’s also a shelve for books and stuff. The drawers of the dresser and closet are pretty big.
I am an incoming freshmen and was placed in a single in Hirai Hall. This isn’t one of the freshman dorm choices and wasn’t one of my picks. I was wondering if this is now a freshman dorm or is it mixed and I could be place in a suite with upperclassman? Also since this in nowhere near the freshman dining hall am I allowed to eat in a closer dining hall?
Hirai Hall is a part of E-Complex and singles in Hirai are big and close to academic buildings. I believe it was Sophomore housing though. You can email Reslife about it and ask if there’s a mistake. I you end up living in E, you can go to Sage Dining Hall for food, which is about only 5 minutes walk from E.
I was assigned to Warren Hall. I’ve read that the building does not have A/C. I know window air conditioners aren’t allowed, but would a smaller one be okay? I cannot work or sleep in heat, but unfortunately I was not able to make it into my first choice of Davison/Nugent.
Unfortunately, you can not bring you own AC to your dorm. However, you can bring fans. If you find yourself having trouble with the heat, you should talk to ResLife or your RA about it and if need, you can request a room change.
If I rent a loft bed in Nugent Hall, can I move my desk under my loft bed? If I can, should I? I’m aware that it may block some in-wall shelving and it could be valuable storage space for me.
Yes, you can fit the desk under the loft bed. In Nugen, in-wall shelves are only at one side of the room, you can lean your bed on the other side and don’t need to worry about wasting storage space.
As a freshman I noticed that single suits are available in barh. Is single suit just a double suit with only one bed?
If you have your room number, you can check out the your room size on this website: http://reslife.rpi.edu/update.do?artcenterkey=659 and a single might not be as big as a double but it’s still big comparing to singles in other buildings.

There are two community kitchens in the building that’s each on the second and third floor and at the corner of each floor.

There’s one shower per bathroom in E Complex.
I don’t know if this is information you guys would know, but how are forced triples decided? Is it determined by the date of deposit placed, an overflow of people requesting triples, or something else?
We don’t really know how reslife decide on the forced triples. All factors you listed might be taken account. It might also have to do with whether if you have already paired with roommates. However, we know that almost all triples in BARH are forced triples this year.
What’s the best freshman dorm? Also do the buildings with a.c. allow for individualized changing? Or is it a entire floor thing.
Buildings with a.c. allows you to turn it on or off. Some buildings such as Nugent and Davison allows you to set the levels of the fan on a.c. For the best dorm, everyone has their own preference. If you like singles, North Hall and Sharp Hall are probably your best bet. Nugent and Davison have nice doubles. If you like to social and communicate with your hallmates, Freshman five are pretty good for that. Specific room pictures can be found under “Room Photo” tab.
How much does it cost to live in sharp?
I believe it was 9800 this academic year (2017-2018) for the whole year. It’s charged as a single room. However, the rate may vary every year.
I have a question about Barton. Is it 3 people in one room or is it 3 individual rooms (singles) who share a bathroom? Also, which freshman dorms do have single rooms?
Barton has mostly triples which have three beds in one room. So yes, 3 people live in one room. North has mostly singles. BARH has some singles but not much. Sharp hall has all suites that are 6 singles and a common room in every suite.
Is North hall a good dorm? I haven’t seen a lot of people that want to live there and I’m wondering if there’s a reason why.
North hall is on the academic side of campus and further away from freshman hill, where most first year students are. That is the main reason I believe people may not want to live there.
What do the privacy walls look like for Davison?

If Davison/Nugent don’t have laundry rooms where do students do laundry?
They are connected to the basement of Sharp where they do laundry.

I would actually not rank Sharp as number one. I personally would rank the Freshman 5 as top. Everyone has a different opinion. That being said, if I were to give mine, it would be the following:

Some students find that Sharp is less social because everyone has their own rooms.

All of Quad will be renovated. This may take some time to fully complete as it is a large dorm. Renovations are new flooring (hardwood replacing carpets), new windows and bathrooms redone

My son is in BARH and the heating is completely unregulated. Sometimes it goes full blast even when the temperature outside is 70 and sometimes it is completely off even when it dips down to 32 deg F. Can someone explain to me how can an institute full of engineers is unable to install something as simple as a thermostat for a residence hall?

Is the Housing Rate for freshmen students in suites like Sharp Hall be more expensive than housing in regular dorms? Or all we do is pay what was written in our financial aid package?
The housing rate differs slightly depending on the dorm. You will pay the amount for the dorm you are living in. The most recent housing costs can be found on the home page.
What are the rules in the dorms?
Dorm rules are mostly common sense. If you’re under 21, no alcohol, obviously. RPI doesn’t allow parties in dorms, but that’s not really an issue since there’s usually something going on off-campus.
As far as room decor goes, none of the multi-colored 5-arm lamps since New York State considers those a fire hazard, the same goes for any upwards-facing lamp. RPI doesn’t allow anything that resembles Christmas lights, as unfortunate as that is. Curtains and flags are also on the no list because of the state. They should have sent you a list of things you can and can’t have at some point, if not, let me know and I can go scare it up.
The guest policy is also pretty reasonable, you can have guests over for 2 nights at a time, but of course, make sure your roommate is fine with it as well.
Quiet hours are from 11 PM to 7 AM on school nights and from 12 AM until 9 AM on weekend. Other than that it basically comes down to common sense and common courtesy. If you’re thinking of doing something that you think might be against the rules or might disturb someone else, don’t do it.
I will be in Colonie B next year. What are the dimensions of a room, closet, and bathroom? Are there shower stalls or tubs with showers? Thanks for your website.
Sadly, we do not have dimensions of the room. That being said, in Colonie B, it is two people living in a suite that has two adjoining rooms and a private bath. Square footage per room is approximately 165 square feet. One room has 163 and one room has 167 square feet. The bathrooms are tubs with a shower.

How much is it to rent a mini fridge?
You can rent a fridge through RPI’s vendor. That being said, a mini fridge by itself to rent is $120 and a mini fridge with a microwave on top is $220. The cost to purchase a standard mini fridge at Walmart is $90-120 and the cost to purchase a microwave is $60. In total, that would be about $180 and you would own the two items instead of renting for $220 and only for a year.
What does Davison have in their kitchens? (stove burner?, oven?)
In their kitchen is a stove, oven and a fridge. I believe there is a microwave, but RPI does not guarentee that. While living in Davison or Nugent, you get access to the basement of Sharp, which also has a kitchen that might have a microwave.
Can I bring a blender?

There is no way for us to know what the general population wants this year. That being said, historically, apartment style apartments go fast. Always make sure you have a plan A, B, C, and D for the lottery.
