I am not sure about what I will major in, maybe math, or engineering. So the problem is if I apply as a math major, is it possible to switch to engineering during the first or second semester?

This website is not for RPI questions in general, that is what the class Facebook group is for. But switching majors at RPI is in general pretty easy. You have to keep in mind the later you switch majors, the higher the chance you have to stay for an extra semester or two to catch up on the work you missed.

My son just received his housing assignment at Hall Hall. Is it possible to go visit RPI and see one of the 3rd floor rooms at Hall Hall during this summer vacation? Thank you.

This would be a question you can ask Admissions and / or Res Life. If you visit you can ask for a residence hall tour of the Freshman Five, but it may not be Hall Hall. Keep in mind the Freshman Five are all identical except for the suites on the first floor, which does not apply to you. Furthermore, you can check out the pictures of the Freshman Five on our website to get a good idea of what the room can look like.

How big are the bathrooms in Hall Hall?

They are the same sized bathrooms as all of the other Freshman Five. Between the toilets, sinks and showers, they take up the size of two dorm rooms. When you first walk into the room you will have stalls (for women there are 5, this may be different than men), then you walk through a doorway and you have 5 sinks and 5 showers.

I’m a incoming freshman and I’m interested in Nugent hall. May I get a few picture that shows the room and its structure, the privacy wall in the center of the room, and the bathroom? I would really appreciate it.

If you look at the tab “Room Photos” and then “Davison and Nugent Hall” you will find almost all of the pictures you are looking for. Sadly, we do not have pictures of the bathroom but the setup is sink in the room, door to the bathroom (lockable), toilet, shower, door to suite room (lockable), sink in room.

Room Pictures Needed!

We are looking for new pictures to update RPIrooms.com! If you would like to take pictures of you room, tell us where it is located and the type of room (double, triple, suite, etc.) that would be fantastic! You can check out the current rooms online to see how the pictures are typically shown. Please send the photos to blackr2@rpi.edu!! Thanks so much

I would like to live in quad next year, in a triple. The location is fantastic and I don’t really want to live on freshman hill anymore. But I keep hearing conflicting opinions on the quality of the quad rooms. Some people seem to think quad is fine, while others pretty much describe it as a slum. Could I please get a straight answer on what the triples in quad are really like? Thanks!

Quad is often quieter than other housing options. The rooms are irregularly shaped but you are very close to class. There are also no long hallways and upperclassmen live on the third floor. In addition, you have AC. It really depends on what the person is looking for if they are interested in Quad.

Hello, my son will be in a Crockett double. I’ve purchased two box fans (one to point out and one to point in) in order to circulate air but I think they may be too big to fit in the window openings. Do you know how big the window openings are? Any recommended fans? Thanks.

The window openings are smaller than the wall but I do not know the exact measurements. That wall is 14’ 8” long so width of the window is a little less. Many students get what is called a Tower Fan. These are tall, rotating fans that take up very little room but are very effective. They can be found at major retailers, Bed Bath and Beyond, Target and Walmart. In addition many tower fans come with remote controls for easy access to switching speed, position, etc.

I will be living in Church VI and wanted to know if there is a big difference in the rooms compared to the rest of quad since it’s kind of by itself. I looked at the quad pictures but I’m not sure if those pictures go for Church as well. Could you also tell me if there are laundry machines in the building? Thanks!

I have looked back in our records and those pictures are not from Church VI. The laundry machines are the same as for the rest of Quad, under the archway between Hunt I and Hunt III.

I apologize for a silly question, but how safe/dangerous is Troy really? How many students have you known that have been a victim of crime to date?

Troy isn’t very dangerous at all as long as you’re smart. As long as you’re not wandering around downtown at night or putting yourself in obviously unsafe situations you should be fine. I personally have never had an issue where I have felt unsafe.

Public Safety is very activity on campus and has made a strong effort in keeping campus safe. Troy like any other American city requires people to be smart about how you travel. Use common sense.

Where in Quad is the laundry? Are there machines in the Pardee stack or in Roebling? I’m assigned to Pardee and in looking at floor plans on the housing site, it looks like the only connected stack to Pardee is Roebling and that’s it. Is this accurate and if so and there are not laundry facilities in either of these stacks, will I need to actually carry my laundry outside to get to a laundry room?

Each two sets of stacks, except for Church VI – which is by itself, are connected on the third level. Laundry is under the archway between Hunt I and Hunt III – about four stacks down from Pardee. It’s a little annoying but not too much of an inconvenience.

I read that they will be opening up Davidson for freshman in a year. Is that true and is it’s location too far away from the other typical freshman living? Also, those rooms seem to be doubles with a divide down the middle making you have some private space. Do you think this is a disadvantage because you don’t end up sitting around talking w/ your roomate because you can’t see them?

Davison is on freshman hill, just like the freshman five and Barton, so it’s not far away at all. Davison is split so you do have your own private space which is just different than other freshman buildings. This doesn’t prevent you from getting to know your roommate, but put effort into hanging out in the common rooms, outside, and other spots on campus.

Are there any exceptions to the requirement that freshman live on campus, such as a student living at home with her parents and commuting to school? If yes, what is the parking situation like? Thanks.

As part of the CLASS initiative, all freshmen must live on campus at RPI. I believe circumstances need to be pretty extreme for students to bypass this. I would recommending emailing ResLife to get their official opinion on your particular situation.

Parking on campus requires a parking permit and freshmen are technically are not allowed to have a permit. Once again, if you need a car for a particular reason, check with RPI transportation/parking.
