Yes you can request they are lofted through the company RPI offers. I believe it is $150-200

What’s in the lounges on every floor of the freshman five? Is it worth getting a microwave or do they have one there or in the kitchens?
On the first floor this is a kitchen. In the kitchen you have a fridge, a stove, and a sink. There is a staircase that leads to the second floor lounge. You then have to go to the main staircases to get to the third floor study rooms that are above the 2nd floor lounge (i.e. the first and second floors connect but the third does not). Personally, I recommend if you are going to be warming things up a decent amount of times to get a microwave. I was on the third floor and didn’t want to walk down 2 flights of stairs, warm up my food, and walk back up 2 flights of stairs when I could just warm up my food in my room.
How much space are under the freshman five beds? I’ve seen pictures of lifted beds that are not lofts. Is that a special kind of bed we can order or is that the standard style?
The freshman five beds are adjustable beds. They can go up to about 5 feet off the ground. These are the standard bed given for the freshman five and you do not have to specially order or request it.
Is it possible to have a full size bed in the stacwyck apartments? and if so would i need to provide my own bed frame as well as the bed?
The size of Stack rooms is not big enough for a full size bed unless you have nothing else in the room but your bed (not recommended).
How high are the spaces under the beds in Nugent? Are the beds adjustable in height without lofting like some of the other dorms? Wondering how big of a trunk I can fit under the bed.
Nugent and Davison have the older beds that do not have the adjustable heights like the Freshman Five. I do not know the measurements of how high they go, but I believe it is somewhere between 2-3 feet. If you go to SO, check then because you stay in Davison and Nugent.
Does Barton already have a loft bed in the triple rooms or do I need to order one from the 3rd party company?
No you do not need to order your bed to be lofted, they already are.
Does anyone know the footprint (dimensions) of the wardrobes in the Freshman Five doubles?
Wardrobe (tall, 2 doors, rod and 2 large drawers on bottom) 6′ tall x 3′ wide x 2′ deep
Hello, my son will be in a Crockett double. I’ve purchased two box fans (one to point out and one to point in) in order to circulate air but I think they may be too big to fit in the window openings. Do you know how big the window openings are? Any recommended fans? Thanks.
The window openings are smaller than the wall but I do not know the exact measurements. That wall is 14’ 8” long so width of the window is a little less. Many students get what is called a Tower Fan. These are tall, rotating fans that take up very little room but are very effective. They can be found at major retailers, Bed Bath and Beyond, Target and Walmart. In addition many tower fans come with remote controls for easy access to switching speed, position, etc.
Does anyone one have the dimensions of the dresser drawers in Cary? Particularly the depth. I know the set has various sizes.
3-drawer chest 38″ tall x 32″ wide x 19″ deep
Do RAHPS apartment bedrooms have closets?
They have the closet dressers that you see in Barton or Blitman.
So, I will be attending RPI in the fall, and I haven’t seen the dorms. I will likely be in BARH and I was wondering how high off the ground the beds are(without a loft or anything) . Also, do you just request a lofted bed when you move in?
Beds are about a little over two feet above the ground. If you get an adjustable bed, it can go up to about four feet off the ground. I did not request lofts but many people do.
Is it possible to request lofted beds for BARH?
I believe so. Contact Res Life (518) 276-6284 and they can give you more information.
Do the beds (in all residence halls) have adjustable legs or do you suggest buying bed lifts for the legs?
Yes, the beds are adjustable in height. No need to buy those bed lifts, unless you want the bed super super high.
Do the rooms in Warren Hall have closets? Ive been looking through the photos you have posted and I cant tell if they do or not. Im living there next year and I just want to be prepared.
There are two closets in each room, one on each side.
Can I hang things from the ceiling if i use those stick on hooks?
I personally wouldn’t recommend doing anything to the room that might leave a permanent hole or mark. You could be charged for damages.
What do the insides of the closets look like? Is there only one bar to hang clothes on? Thanks!
Depending on which building you are in, the standard closet will have one bar and a shelf above it. The closets are actually quite deep and you will be surprised how much you can actually put in there.
Do all triples generally have one lofted bed and one bunk bed? Thanks!
Yes. Majority of triples will have a bunk bed arrangement for the two beds, and a lofted bed.
I was just wondering if all the doubles in Hall had bunk beds
They will not unless you specifically request lofted beds. Those request will go to a third party company who will set up lofted beds before you move in.
I am trying to buy a shower curtain (yes, I know they are included but I want a pretty one) for my dorm next year in Polytechnic. What length should I get? I see some are 70″ long but thats hardly six feet and I’m not sure if it will reach to the floor and keep the water where its supposed to be. If you have any idea, I’d much appreciate it!
The showers in Polytech are step in showers, not bathtubs so I will think like 7ft curtains? I’m not completely sure to be honest.
Do the desks fit under lofted beds? I saw a picture of a triple in one of the freshmen five where that wasn’t the case but I wanted to make sure.
Yes, a desk will fit underneath a lofted bed.
One of the “what to bring lists” mentions vacuum, but another does not. Should I really bring a vacuum?
It’s really up to you. It’s handy to have if you ever spill something or the carpet is looking dirty, but I know many people have gotten away without bringing one at all.
I was just curious if you could bring your own mattress.
RPI supplies with you a mattress. Unless you find a place to store the extra mattress, I suggest that you do not bring your own.
Can you give me a comprehensive description of the rooms/furniture in quad? I’m living there next year and I’ve never actually been inside
I would suggest you first read this post and then browse the room photos for Quad. Pictures are worth a thousand words.
Are you allowed to use risers to lift your bed (Assuming it is not already a bunk or loft)?
I believe you are allowed to use risers but I would not see the need. All the beds are adjustable and you can set them to be quite high. I think adding risers would just make it entirely too difficult to get onto your bed.
Will the dorm mattresses come with bed sheets? What are the dimensions of the bed?
Mattresses do not come with bed sheets so you will need to supply your own. They are twin extra long (38” x 80”).
What are the maximum dimensions of the refrigerator you can put in your residence hall? What is the usual price of this type of refrigerator?
Refrigerators are measured by volume. The maximum dimension allowed in a residence hall is 6 cubic feet.
You can look online (Sears and Bestbuy), but compact refrigerators range from about $130 (2.5 cubic feet) to $250 (4.5 cubic feet).
Just some questions about RAHPS. Do all of the rooms have new furniture? If not, is there going to be new furniture for all the remaining ones that didn’t get it for next semester? Just a question.
Any apartments in RAHPS B will have new or one year old furniture, I believe. The majority, if not all, of RAHPS (on the South side of the stadium) got new furniture about 2 years ago. Posted January 2013.
1. What size is the bed? I see on the residence life list saying bring extra-long twin sheets, but isn’t these all single beds? 2. How is the garbage collection works? 3. What size is the window? Is there need for curtain?(most likely I am going to live in Cary/Freshman 5.) 4.Approximately, how much each is the bed, desk & chair cost? 5. Do students allow to nailing or gluing things on wall? Can we use hooks, or bring own shelf, mirror that need to hand on wall?
1. The bed is an extra-long twin bed. In the United States, a “twin” bed is a bed size for a single person. So, yes… extra-long twin sheets fit on a “single” bed.
2. You put your garbage and recycling either in small containers in the lounge spaces or you take it out to the nearby dumpster. The city collects the garbage from the dumpsters… you don’t have to worry about this.
3. The windows vary in size, but you are not allowed to have curtains anyway for fire code.
4. All of the furniture (bed, desk, chair, dresser, shelf) is included in the cost of the room. You cannot buy them separtely.
5. No, you cannot nail or glue things to the wall. You can use hooks and push-pins. A company called 3M makes a popular hook with a sticky back that can easily be removed at the end of the year.
Would it be a good idea to bring a refrigerator to our dorms? Also, will we need to bring a water dispenser too? Will we be able to get bottled water on campus?
Whether or not you bring a mini-fridge to your dorm room is really about personal preference and your eating habits. Some people go to the dining hall or a local store/restaurant/on-campus-convenience-store/cafe every time they are hungry. Some people prefer to preserve some snack foods and drinks in a fridge in their room. I don’t know your style – I rarely used my mini-fridge freshman year.
A lot of students use Brita pitchers, but there are sinks and/or water fountains in every residence hall, if you’re fine with that.
Yes… you can get bottled water on campus. You can buy it at cafes (there are 4) or at Father’s, or a few other places. You can also pick it up with to-go meals at the dining halls. RPI is like a small city.
What is the width of the standard desk (or all dimensions)?
Desks are 24” deep and 48” wide, usually.
Would you recommend freshmen to bring refrigerators and fans to their dorms? Also, does each dorm include a bed with mattress?
You can bring a refrigerator up to 6 cubic feet. If your hall doesn’t have AC, you may want a fan, but you’ll only need it for a few weeks at the beginning and a few weeks at the end of the year. Use this checklist from ResLife.
Yes, each resident gets a bed with a mattress.
Do all the bunk beds have rails along the sides so we don’t fall off the bed? Is there a ladder in the room for the upper bunk bed? Also, how much weight can the upper bunk bed support? (I might be putting my laptop and schoolbag on the bed with me.) Much thanks!!
If the bunk bed does not have a rail, you can ask for one (at no cost). I wouldn’t be terribly worried about falling off, though; do you fall off your bed when it’s on the ground? Barton (which has a lot of lofted beds) has some beds with a railing and some without. Some students use a ladder and some students climb the end of the bed which has rungs.
I don’t know with certainty how much weight a bunked bed can hold, but I will say this: students sometimes hang out with 3-4 students sitting on the top bed. Some students also have significant others sleep overnight in the same bed. This is an engineering school – we aren’t going to put you in a bunk bed that can’t stably hold a student, a laptop, and a backpack…
If we choose to use a refrigerator, fan, or other appliance in our residence hall, will the power expenses of the appliance be added unto our Room and Board expenses?
No, no utility (electricity, water, trash, etc.) bills are added onto the Room & Board charge. The price you saw is the price you pay and it includes all utilities.
In other words, you can use as much electricity as you’d like and you won’t pay anything more. Read about allowed appliances before you purchase something though. Many must have an automatic shutoff feature.
Does blitman have a different mattress size, i have read elsewhere but with different answers that they are wider than the normal xlongs.
Mmmm… no. The mattresses in Blitman are the standard twin XL.
Polytech has full-size mattresses.
Is there room for storage under a bunk bed in barton? What is the height of the storage bin that would fit under the bed?
Bunk beds in Barton can be raised and lowered with a system of notches along the bedposts. At the highest notch, the bottom bed should handle anything 27” tall or less.
Can one bunk the beds in doubles in Bray Hall? If so, how does one do it? My roommate and I are considering doing so, instead of paying for lofts.
I understand that you were being proper, but it might be difficult for one to bunk the beds. I imagine it would take at least two people. :p
Yes, you can do it. The beds are made to do this – they are not simply resting on one another. That’s all I know.
How “movable” are the dressers in the Freshman Five? I’m in a triple in Cary, and didn’t really like the setup too much. Is there anyway to rearrange the room?
The furniture along the walls where you enter (the same wall as the door) is not movable at all. It’s built into the room. You will be able to move your bed, your desk, and of course the shelf on the desk.
Sorry, bud. Good luck arranging it in a desirable way!
Do all quad stock kitchens have fridges? It just says that the corner ones have large refrigerators but nothing about the others…
The other ones do not have fridges.
No matter where in Quad you live, you will have card access to the corner stacks if you need to store things in the big fridges. That said, it won’t necessarily be most convenient for regular usage.
Do the kitchens have coffe makers?
Short and simple: nope. Sorry!
You’ll have to get your own coffeemaker, no matter where you live. But if you have a meal plan, dining halls have (what I believe to be) a decent selection of coffee! I’m not a coffee drinker.
Also, remember that any small appliances in dorm rooms must have an automatic shut off feature.
A freshman from China asking: are the beddings ready in freshmen 5? Should I bring any of the pillows, quilts, sheets, mats or even mattresses?
Great question, mostly because it’s you’ll be at a loss if you don’t have the right answer.
NONE of the residence hall beds on campus come with bedding. Every bed comes with a mattress (size is twin extra long: 38” x 80”), but nothing more than the mattress. You will need to bring (or purchase when you arrive to Troy) sheets, pillow(s), quilts/comforter, and a mattress pad.
What are the pros and cons of lofting your bed in a double? Bray specifically, if the hall matters.
The hall doesn’t matter much.
Pros:
- More space in the room
- You can put your desk and other stuff under your bed
Cons:
- You have to literally climb into bed. Easy for some. Hard for others.
- You’re sleeping higher… it can be warmer/hot in the winter.
- Yes, it’s possible to fall out of bed. If you don’t follow out of your bed on a normal frame, you probably won’t fall out of a lofted bed. I think it comes with a rail.
- It costs about $150.
Have a double in Cary. Can the shelf above the desk be removed and used elsewhere in the room? I’m thinking of putting the desk by the window but don’t want to block the view.
Yes. The shelves above the desks on campus are a separate piece and can be removed.
Is there space underneath the beds in Polytech? Also are you able to move the beds?
There is no accessible space under the beds in Polytech. One might call the frame “enclosed.”
The beds can be moved, yes. I will say, though, that the arrangement the furniture is in is probably the most efficient use of the space.
What size bed comes in the Bryckwyck apartments?
You’ll have to call the Office of Residence Education during business hours to get a certain answer, but I only know of full beds being in Polytech. All the other beds I know of on campus are twin-XL.
That beings said, this area has historically been for graduate students and faculty/staff, so it’s quite likely that they are full mattresses.
In short: call ResEd.
Do singles in Nugent have a shelf built into the wall like the doubles do?
Short answer: no. You’re either in 215, 311, 315, or 415.
311 has a vertical chest of drawers (about 5’ tall) and a large closet with double sliding doors. Additionally there is a desk, bed, and some shelves below the large window.
The X15’s have a bed, desk, and a built in closet (but still a piece of furniture). The closet is half hanging space. The other half is split into drawers and a cabinet.
Hopefully this makes sense, but there is no large shelf piece diving the rooms as the doubles have.
What are the dimensions of the beds in the freshman dorms?
The beds in freshman residence halls are twin extra long mattresses. They are 80” long, 39” wide, and 6.5” deep.
Are you allowed to screw things into dorm walls – for example, hanging an organizational bar or hook?
You are discouraged from installing decorations/furniture that leave permanent marks from the room and doing so leaves the risk that you will be fined for damages at the end of the year. That being said, no one is going to stop you. If, at the end of the year, you remove it and repair your holes, you will be perfectly fine. No reasonable RA will make you take anything like an organizational hook off of your wall. I would say that you should hang your bar/hook if you want it – better to be comfortable in your space and deal with the repair later!
I might recommend that you check out 3M strips and other alternatives – they may do the same job and be easier.
If our setup is the same as the photos you have of the girls room from bray hall, and we want to put a fridge/microwave under our beds like they did, what dimensions/sizes of the fridge/microwave should we look for?
Refrigerators should be no larger than 6 cubic feet. With some help, I’ve estimated that the particular fridge in that photo is 24” tall, but there is quite a bit of space (probably > 30”) under those beds. Depth is limited by the width of a xl-twin bed (same width as twin). Width of anything under the bed is limited by the length of a xlong-twin bed (80”).
For the microwave, you should just get something small and inexpensive, I would imagine.
Hi, do you know if all of the beds in the Quadrangle are like the ones in your photos (attached to a closet), or are there movable/debunkable ones too?
Yes, I do know. In the Quad, there are some beds that are bunked in a permanent way, while some beds are on frames that are low to the ground. Double rooms often have one of each; one bed is bunked (attached to the closet) and the other is free and low to the ground.
Aside from making a visit to the room that you are assigned, there’s really no telling which beds are attached when it comes to the Quad.
I’m trying to buy sheets and a mattress protector. I know the beds are twin-xl, but how many inches deep is the mattress?
Mattresses are 6.5” deep.
